- DISPATCHES: CHILE 31/01/96

- Soure: Time Out, London
- Date: January 1, 1996

- By Richard Neill
-
- UFO spotters, free-range lentil-eating fruitcaked, fat ladies offering free
- love and a glass of herbal infusion... Every country has a scattering of these
- groups, but only one nation concentrates them all into one strip of land. The
- Elqui Valley in Chili lies on the southern edge of the Atacama Desert and is
- home to the national drink, Pisco, (a fiery grape-based spirit) and a motley
- crew of New Age nutters. Both cause painful headaches but you can avoid a
- double whammy if you drink the Pisco first, then meet the nutters.
-
- Anywhere boasting the clearest skies in the world is asking for trouble. But
- build a few observatories, call yourself the `gateway to the stars' and David
- Icke's your uncle - you've suddenly got a sad-case stampede on your hands. The
- fun really started in the early '80s when two astute Chileans (known to this
- day as Sister Cecilia and Sister Gladys) predicted the end of the world for
- midnight on August 5 1994, and managed to sell a few hundred tickets to watch
- the whole shebang from the cosy confines of their Elqui commune. The date came
- and went, and in Pisco-induced confusion over whose watch was right, Cecilia
- managed to pocket the pesos and escape to Bolivia.
-
- Gladys stood her ground, offered free love as compensation and is still there
- today, albeit as a rather knackered shadow of her former self.
-
- It's easy to understad why stressed-out Santiaguinos come to Elqui instead of
- visiting a shrink: the landscape is a visual chill pill in itself, with
- mountains resembling giant folds of demerara zipped up with threads of bright
- green vines, all set off against a numbingly blue sky. A French winemaker would
- kill to get a `terroir' like this, yet the Pisco producers seem blissfully
- ignorant of the marketing possibilities. Pisco - a drink from the end of the
- world! The drink that revived Gladys!
-
- The full Elqui wind-down package involved a reading of your Mayan calendar,
- sunset wit an ice-cold Pisco Sour, and a little after dinner UFO-spotting. The
- first takes patience and an ability to keep straight faced in from of Chile's
- very own Mystic Mayan Meg; but armed with your date of birth, it's possible to
- discover the real you in under two hours. it tuned out I'm a blue magnetic
- eagle with healthy prospects for '96, the year of the electric magician'.
- Hardly something to shout about in downtown Santiago, but in Elqui, blue
- magnetic eagles get plenty of respect.
-
- The UFOs proved a little harder to find. Fernando Valdez, the local Zen artist
- and authority on all things extraterrestrial, believes the mountains around the
- valley connect and atract cosmit power and flying visitors. Valdez claimed to
- have seen four in the space of 12 years. Apart from a couple of rogue
- satellites, my own nightly gazes failed to spot anything; and in truth, my
- daytime encounters suggested ETs had landed and taken up residence years ago.
- For what is probably the most conservative of the South American nations, it
- seems strange that normal Chileans haven't attempted to cleanse this valley of
- marbleless cronies and gullible twits; but sense obviously decrees that
- concentrated is better than scattered in the loony department. Besides which
- it'll make a great theme park when tourism eventually kicks in.
